The Yueyang Zhonghua Giant Panda Garden in Hunan province recently opened its doors to the public, marking the largest panda garden in central China, hosting a total of ten pandas. CGTN reporter Dai Kaiyi takes us behind the scenes, showcasing how these pandas are settling into their new home, experiencing their first Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations, and shedding light on the staff's preparations to welcome both the pandas and visitors during this festive season.
In the heart of Hunan Province, the panda garden, open for just over a month, has become a magnet for panda enthusiasts across the nation. Visitors flock to witness these furry bears, originating from the southwestern Sichuan Province, home to over 80% of China's giant pandas. The garden stands as their new abode.
Xiang Le, the Director of Animal Care at Yueyang Nanhu Zoo Co., shares, "After settling in, the ten pandas are doing well in Yueyang. With expert guidance and attentive care, they are all very stable, with good spirits, appetite, and activity levels. We've even made special toys for them to play with based on their preferences."
The Lunar New Year brought a unique touch to the giant panda garden. Each of the ten pandas received a cartoon portrayal, ensuring visitors could easily identify them. Despite their black-and-white coats, the colorful costumes added a festive flair. Keepers curated a special diet for the pandas during the Spring Festival celebrations, enhancing their culinary experience.
At a mini-size museum within the garden, bamboo sticks, leaves, apples, freshly-picked bamboo shoots, corn, and occasional carrots make up the delightful menu for the pandas. In their first Spring Festival at the new home, the pandas were treated to a special feast crafted by their caretakers.
Hu Jun, Deputy General Manager at Yueyang Longshan Cultural Tourism Development Co., shares, "During the Spring Festival, to enhance the festive atmosphere, the panda park has launched the 'Panda Welcomes Spring, Prosperity with the Dragon' themed event. The outdoor area is decorated with panda-themed window flowers, couplets, and wall stickers. After entering the park, visitors can also take photos at traditional Chinese-style photo spots and the Panda New Year Wall. The feeding staff have also prepared delicious 'gift bags' for the pandas."
Giant pandas, cherished as China's national treasure, find themselves under the caring watch of dedicated caretakers. The garden in Hunan Province exemplifies this commitment, ensuring a memorable Lunar New Year for the pandas in their new habitat
