Dick Move: The Underground Rockers Set to Open for the Foo

In the heart of Auckland's Karangahape Rd, tucked behind a discreet door at St Kevin's Arcade, Dick Move, a five-piece band, has been gathering at the dimly lit Whammy Bar for years. Amid intimate gigs, shared beers, and 3 am conversations, they harbor a secret agenda that almost slipped away — opening three shows for the Foo Fighters.

Vocalist Lucy Suttor, along with guitarists Hariet Ellis and Justin Rendell, bassist Lulu Macrae, and drummer Luke Boyes, form this punk band with a socialist edge, energizing audiences of no more than 700 for almost five years. Tonight, they stand on a stage before an estimated 50,000 people — undoubtedly the biggest gig of their lives.

Dick Move's songwriting delves into punk themes: politics, social issues, privilege, and holding influential figures accountable. "We make music about social and political issues, aiming to inspire positive change — all while having fun," shared Suttor with 1News

Avoiding labels of mere musicians or activists, they see their art as a fusion, fueled by real-world experiences. "The things we write about are the things we're talking about at the bar at 3 am, like during the election," explained Suttor. "It's one thing feeding the other."

Dick Move paused with 1News at their home venue, reflecting on their journey to this pivotal moment. They discuss upcoming shows with Dave Grohl and ponder what lies ahead once the echoes of the stadium-sized mosh pits fade and all the "foo" has been fought.
