Pantone Picks Peach Fuzz as Color of the Year

In 2024, according to the Pantone Color Institute, Peach Fuzz is the Color of the Year. This warm, orangey-pink hue symbolizes our yearning for closeness and connection, radiating warmth. Lauren Labrecque, a color specialist at the University of Rhode Island, finds it reminiscent of sunrise and a pleasant summer day, expressing approval for its soft and warm characteristics.

Labrecque believes this choice resonates well with the current atmosphere, reflecting a collective desire for soothing and warmth amid conflicts and economic challenges. Designers and marketers often adopt Pantone's color trends, with Labrecque noting the interplay between setting and following trends.

Peach Fuzz, lighter than the previous year's Viva Magenta, stands apart from the rich blue-purple hue of 2022. Elizabeth Johnson, a neuroscientist and marketing instructor, sees a nostalgic quality in Peach Fuzz, akin to 1940s and 1950s makeup packaging.

Johnson explains that our associations with color, including the comforting feel of Peach Fuzz, are learned rather than hardwired. The human visual system prioritizes greens and reds, with cultural experiences shaping aesthetic connections to colors. Peach Fuzz-like shades exist across the natural world, spanning land, sea, and space, creating a visually captivating spectrum.
